Liverpool players finally served revenge on Real Madrid – tonight they celebrated 2:0 at “Anfield” and thus remained the leaders in the Champions League table as the only team with a maximum of 15 points. Believe it or not, with six wins, Real Madrid is now “hanging” and placing in the playoffs!
The evening at “Anfield” was marked by missed penalties by Kylian Mbappe and then by Mohamed Salah, but the goals of McAllister and Gakpo were enough for the Reds’ big victory.
Liverpool were dominant from the start and made it clear that they wanted to win tonight. Already in the fourth minute, Darvin Nunez had his first big chance. Mo Salah stole the ball from Embape in the middle, followed by a quick attack and a pass from the Egyptian to Nunez, who aimed for the far corner, but the young Asensio masterfully intervened from the goal line.
Darwin had an even better chance in the 23rd minute, when after a carom in the penalty area, the ball bounced right in front of the goal, but Courtois was masterfully saved by Real.
The Uruguayan missed the third big chance in the 33rd minute, he headed just past the post, so Real was lucky again.
As for Real’s game, it practically did not exist in the first half, which is also confirmed by the fact that they did not have a shot on goal.
We saw a similar story in the sequel. Liverpool got off to a great start, pressing and attacking, and in the 50th minute, Bradley had another great opportunity, he cut in from the second plan and headed in, Courtois was masterful.
But, two minutes later, the Belgian couldn’t do anything either. Liverpool again performed a nice action, on the left side, then McAllister played a double pass with Bradley and intelligently hit the counter corner on the ground for 1:0.
Liverpool’s rush did not stop, McAllister made a dangerous attempt from the edge of the penalty area, the ball went past the post.
And then, new bad news for Real – in the 54th minute, Eduardo Kamavinga grabbed the back box, he had to leave the game immediately, and he was replaced by Dani Ceballos. At the same time, Carlo Ancelotti decided to introduce Lucas Vazquez instead of Arda Guler, which meant that Fede Valverde returned to his position in the middle.
It was Lukas Vasquez who did the key thing in the 58th minute. Andy Robertson was late, pounced on his fake and scored a penalty. Kylian Mbappe took responsibility, but the masterful Kelleher read his intention and saved a shot that was too soft.
Exactly 10 minutes later, on the other side – a penalty for Liverpool forced by Salah. The Egyptian rumbled down the right, tripped Mendy, who brought him down and scored a penalty. Salah took the ball and headed past the post!
However, Liverpool redeemed themselves six minutes later. In the 76th minute, Robertson crossed after a coordinated action, and Gakpo was the highest in the jump for 2:0!
Liverpool kept their advantage until the end and deservedly celebrated and remained at the top, while Real is “first over the line” with six points to enter the playoffs.
We also saw a real frenzy at the “Louis II” stadium, where Benfica defeated Monaco after a reversal in the finish – 2:3.
Monaco took the lead in the 13th minute with a goal by Ben Segir, after an assist by Golovin for 1:0.
Benfica came back at the start of the second half when Pavlidis equalized.
In the 58th minute, Monaco was left with one player less, as Singo was sent off due to the second yellow card. But in the 67th minute with one less player, Monaco took the lead, as Magasa, who entered the game, scored for 2:1.
Benfica did not give up, in the 84th minute Di Marija assisted for Cabral to make it 2:2.
The masterful Di Maria was again an assistant in the 88th minute, this time for Amduni for a great victory for Benfica!
Tonight, the Red Star players achieved their first victory in the Champions League over Stuttgart (5:1), but they must have watched the match played in the Netherlands with great attention, where the last rival who will come to the “Rajko Mitić” stadium in the month of January. PSV achieved an unreal, almost magical victory against Shakhtar, as they were losing 0:2 in the 87th minute. In the end it was 3:2!
Shakhtar took the lead with goals from Sikan in the eighth minute and Zubkov in the 37th minute.
In the 69th minute, the Ukrainians were left with one player less, as Pedrinho earned a straight red card, and PSV managed to use the numerical advantage. Tilman was the hero, he scored two goals, first in the 87th minute, and then in the 90th for the final 2:2.
