Last year, 1.5 million new battery electric cars (BEVs) were registered in the European Union, bringing their total number to 4.5 million.
The number of battery-powered electric cars has increased by 48.5 percent compared to 2022, when there were a total of three million in the EU, Eurostat announced.
The share of battery electric cars among new car registrations in the EU reached 14.6 percent in 2023. Until 2018, the share of such vehicles was below one percent, and it gradually increased to 5.3 percent in 2020, to nine percent in 2021 and to 12.1 percent in 2022.
In Denmark, battery electric cars accounted for 7.1 percent of all passenger cars last year, and this share was also relatively high in Sweden at 5.9 percent, Luxembourg at 5.1 percent and the Netherlands at five percent.
In contrast, 14 countries recorded a share of BEVs in the total number of passenger cars below one percent. The lowest share was recorded in Cyprus, Greece and Poland, in all three cases at 0.2 percent. Last year, on average, electric cars accounted for 1.7 percent of all cars in the EU, he reports Tanjug.
