Wear and tear of the hip joint can make everyday life very difficult, so it is worth starting its treatment in time to possibly prevent the implantation of a hip prosthesis. Dr. Zoltán Páll, surgeon, traumatologist and sports doctor at the Pain Center, drew attention to the recognition of predisposing factors and treatment options.
If the cartilage and bone tissue in the hip undergo degenerative changes, wear and tear of the hip joint appears over time, which can become very serious. The disease, which involves pain and restricted movement, is primarily associated with aging, but there are some factors that increase the risk of its development. These are:
- Abnormal posture
- Previous hip or leg injury
- Birth defect (hip dysplasia) and change in the anatomical position of the hip
- Certain metabolic diseases (parathyroid and thyroid diseases)
- Ligamentous and muscular system vulnerability
- Long-term steroid use
- Alcoholism
- Female gender (male mines occur less frequently)
- Obesity (the greater the load on the hips, the faster the process can become)
- Exaggerated or improperly structured training
Phases of hip joint wear
The symptoms caused by the disease mainly depend on the stage and duration of existence, but the most typical complaint is hip pain. Within this, we can distinguish different phases.
– First phase: with appropriate treatment, the process can be reversed and stopped. In such cases, the pain typically occurs in the morning and disappears as it “sets in”.
– Msecond phase: with more serious wear and tear, the pain already affects everyday life, it becomes more difficult to walk, get on the bus, and climb stairs. The X-ray shows the narrowing of the joint space, increased calcification of the bones under the cartilage, and even cysts (fluid-filled tubes) in the bone.
– Harmadic phase: even the simplest activities cause problems, self-care is at risk, fractures are more frequent, as the bone tissue in the joint is severely degraded.
That is why you should consult a doctor at the first complaints
- Patients should be aware that they should consult a doctor at the first disturbing complaints. This not only makes pain relief possible, but also slows down the process and prevents permanent damage. Degradation of cartilage can be prevented by appropriate cartilage-building preparations, which, due to their huge selection, should be recommended by a specialist, emphasizes Dr. Zoltán Páll, PájdalomKözpont surgeon, traumatologist, sports doctor. – Professional physical therapy is of utmost importance, which strengthens the muscles around the hips and improves blood supply to the area. The medical assistance also covers effective pain relief and improving the quality of life, so we can use, for example, shock wave therapy, Bemer treatment, injection therapy based on the introduction of medical collagen, which can achieve a significant increase in the quality of life, according to the given condition and the patient’s needs. Ultimately, however, in the most severe cases, hip replacement surgery may also be performed.
