The Cinemascop Festival returns this summer between August 1-11, with the seventh edition, which promises to be even more full of events and surprises for visitors to the summer garden in Eforie Sud. The organizers have prepared 11 story days this year, with European film screenings, a multitude of workshops for all ages, exhibitions, a silent disco party and a concert, but also new elements such as community meals and sports activities on the beach.
Cinemascope Festival had its first edition in 2018, when the summer garden was brought back into the cultural circuit, after 14 years in which it was inaccessible. Every year, at the beginning of August, tourists and locals from Eforie Sud can enjoy educational and entertaining activities, aimed at bringing together as diverse an audience as possible in a festival that evolves with each edition. This year, Cinemascop is organized by the Visual Arts Forum Association, together with the Bucharest Czech Center, EUNIC Romania, RADEF RomaniaFilm and Eforie City Hall.
The seventh edition is a special one, because it brings a more complex program, consisting of both the events known and loved by the loyal public, as well as new activities that will give visitors the opportunity to discover European cultures and enjoy the time spent together at sea in new ways. The objective will be directed to nine European countries that will be presented through the prepared events, completed by two days whose program will culminate with dance and music.
The summer garden opens daily at 18:00. But on August 2, 3, 4, 8 and 10, the action starts earlier, on the beach. Sports lovers will be able to participate in sports activities such as football, volleyball, oina or pétanque between 09:00-11:00 and 16:00-18:00 on the beach in the Moon Beach bar area. Then, you are invited to the garden, where the workshops will be waiting for you.
Between 18:00 and 20:00, children and adults can take part in creative and educational workshops. The workshops for children traditional to the festival will be recurring, where they will enrich their knowledge and artistic skills, through techniques such as painting, modeling, collage or comics. Workshops for children are organized with the support of Koh-I-Noor. Also recurring will be the creative recycling workshops, which will offer new ideas to participants regarding the reuse of materials they no longer need in artistic or useful ways. In addition, six more workshops will take place on August 1, 8, 10 and 11, such as Hebrew art, cyanotype, graffiti or theater and improvisation exercises, the latter being supported by the Romanian Cultural Institute.
Because this edition is about getting to know the culture of European countries, what better way to discover them than through food? Some of the festival’s international partners have set up community meals, which will bring visitors together in a context that always makes us feel good, like family. On the first day of the festival, the Yunus Emre Institute invites you to taste the bulgur kısır salad, on August 2 you will be able to create your own Czech chlebíčky sandwiches, together with the Czech Center, on August 4 you will bake mini Dutch poffertjes pancakes, with the support of the Kingdom Embassy Netherlands, and on August 8 we will taste cheeses and fruits from the French Institute, along with a glass of wine offered by Caii de la Letea. A special evening from the culinary register will take place on August 9, when the teenagers from CEVA will prepare the performative community meal “PiPer – performative picnic”, with dishes one and one, like at sea. All meals start at 19:30.
Of course, Cinemascope cannot be Cinemascope without films. Every evening you will be able to watch a European film, except for the evenings of August 3 and 9. Alice Nellis, 2022, 1h52′); 04.08 – Dutch film, All by bike (r. Arne Gielen, 2022, 1h10′); 05.08 – film italian, A different world (r. Riccardo Milani, 2024, 1h53′); 06.08 – film polonez, The planet of the lonely (dir. Mitja Okorn, 2016, 2h14′); 07.08 – Swedish film, UFO Sweden (dir. Victor Danell, 2022, 1h55′); 08.08 – film francez, Bad Dog (dir. Jean-Baptiste Durand, 2023, 1h33′); 10.08 – Romanian movies, Horie (dir. Ana Maria Comănescu, 2024, 1h48′); 11.08 – British film, Empire of Light (r. Sam Mendes, 2022, 1h55’).
Two of the evenings will not be about film, but about music. On August 3, let’s dance at a silent disco party, where participants will be able to choose from three different music channels to satisfy everyone’s taste and dance style. It is the second year that an evening of the festival is dedicated to a party, last year’s being a success. Also, the music returns on August 9, with Maria Grosu & 10 strings, who will perform a live concert with established songs from famous films. Both events start at 21:00.
The garden is also a relaxation space, which you can visit as such. Every day it will resound with the music specific to the European countries presented, the songs being selected by Andrei Constantinescu, DJ of the TaNăNaNa radio station, founder and drummer of the alternative grunge rock band Coven Clash and social DJ under the name AndreiC. Against this musical background you can see the five exhibitions in the garden – that of the artist Mimi Pleșoianu from ETAJ on Wheels, an immersive work that illustrates the idealized atmosphere of a dreamlike coastline, Emil Cristian Ghiță’s installation that talks about ecology, using recycling as a method and glass packaging as a working material for artistic expression, an eco-exhibition adapted from the comic book “A world without end”, by Jean-Marc Jancovici and Christophe Blain, offered by the French Institute, the suite of drawings signed by Adrian Preda, present in the volume of poetry “Sentimentul naturii” and the work signed by Matei Emanuel that can be found in the exhibition space of the garden, 1MP Gallery. Don’t forget that you can take home art, in the form of a drawing made by contemporary Romanian artists, from the Art Machine, a project of Pastila Roz.
Just before entering the garden you will be able to watch the artists who will create a 140 sqm mural on the outside wall, behind the projection screen. With the help of Policolor, the artist Maria Zurbagiu and the Dutch artist Reinier Landwehr will create a painting in dialogue, the latter participating in the festival with the support of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
All festival activities and events are free to participate in. Senior visitors will also enjoy a limited free Azuga beer before the film.
