12 people in the Czech Republic were injured in a traffic accident on Friday, where a minibus from a prison and a passenger car collided.
This is reported by the Czech news agency CTK News according to news agency dpa.
Six of the 12 people have been moderately or seriously injured, says a spokesperson for the emergency services.
It is not yet clear whether any of them are in danger.
In the prison’s minibus were 16 female inmates who were on their way to their workplace, which is outside the prison. There was also a driver and a prison guard on the bus.
– Security was not compromised, says a spokesperson for the prison.
All the women in question are serving sentences for “minor” offences, it goes on to say.
It is not clear how many of the women are among the injured.
The accident happened near the town of Lubenec. It is located about 80 kilometers west of the capital Prague.
Emergency services sent seven ambulances and a helicopter to the scene to deal with the accident.
It is not clear whether a criminal act is suspected in connection with the accident.
In June, the authorities in the country opened an investigation into another case.
Here, four people were killed and 27 ended up in hospital when a passenger train collided with a freight train near the town of Pardubice.
In 2021, a violent train collision in the western Czech Republic also claimed three lives when an express train and a passenger train collided. There were also around 50 people who were injured.
After the fatal accidents, there have been calls from several quarters for the Czech railway network to be modernized. It is out of date, says the criticism.
The country’s government plans to implement the European Train Control System (ETCS) throughout the rail network by 2025 to improve safety.
