At least 12 have died after Hurricane Milton hit Florida, where tornadoes have contributed to some of the worst destruction, NBC News writes Thursday.
Milton moved from west to east in the state, and large areas around Tampa Bay were flooded. Roads were blocked by fallen trees and power poles.
About three million are without power, writes the AFP news agency, which reports that tornadoes apparently caused more deaths than floods.
As the death toll remained at least 10, Democratic Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said “our understanding is that the deaths were due to tornadoes.”
However, the destruction was not as bad as feared.
“The storm was significant, but thank God it was not the worst possible scenario”, says the governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, at a press conference according to AFP.
When Milton made landfall, it was like a Category 3 hurricane. The US National Weather Service (NWS) issued a total of 126 tornado warnings across the state. It was the “highest number ever issued on a single day in records dating back to 1986”.
The President of the United States, Joe Biden, held a press conference about the consequences after the hurricane on Thursday. Here he says that he is sure that since many early warnings about the storm have helped save lives.
In addition, he lashed out at the Republican presidential candidate, Donald Trump, in connection with some of the allegations that have abounded after Hurricane Helene also hit Florida. Among other things, Trump has said that the aid authorities in the emergency management agency FEMA have used government funds to help migrants instead of victims of hurricanes.
“Are you kidding me,” Biden asked when a reporter wanted to know if he had spoken to Trump to get him to stop spreading misinformation.
“Mr. President Trump, former President Trump: Get a life, man,” Biden said.
“Help these people”, was the president’s call.
