In a written statement made by the US State Department, it was stated that the Nicaraguan administration has taken steps regarding the political prisoners that the US and Guatemala have been struggling with for a long time.
The statement noted that Nicaragua released 135 political prisoners from various churches and civil society organizations on “humanitarian grounds” and that these people were brought to Guatemala with the logistical means provided by the United States.
EMPHASIS ON COOPERATION FROM THE USA
Stating that they will continue their efforts to release political prisoners held in prison in Nicaragua, the US Department of State emphasized that they will continue to cooperate with relevant stakeholders on this issue.
Among those released by Nicaragua were reportedly 13 officials from the Evangelical Church of America.
While the US administration claimed that the individuals in question were religious figures, Nicaraguan authorities claimed that these individuals were conducting commercial and real estate activities under the umbrella of the church.
