Consumption of alcohol, drugs and medication while driving remains the leading cause of fatal accidents, followed by excessive speed and the presence of pedestrians.
Alcohol, drugs and speeding, the three main causes of accidents in France
In 2023, the French motorway network recorded 181 deaths, a figure that is very slightly lower than the 188 deaths recorded in 2022. The main causes of fatal accidents on motorways include the consumption of alcohol, drugs and medication, responsible for 31% of fatal accidents. Young drivers are particularly at risk, with 40% of drivers involved being under 35.reveals ASFA, the professional association bringing together all motorway concessionaires and operators, in its “2023 Safety Report”.
These accidents occur mainly at night and on weekends, with blood alcohol levels often well above the legal limit. Excessive speed is the second leading cause of fatal accidents (19%), especially at night, also affecting mainly young drivers. In third place, the presence of pedestrians contributes to 18% of fatal accidents, often linked to broken down vehicles or pedestrians crossing the roads. This situation underlines the importance of motorway safety awareness campaigns. Dangerous manoeuvres, up for the second consecutive year, represent 17% of fatal accidents, indicating more aggressive and reckless driving.
15% of drivers involved in a fatal accident were using their smartphone while driving
The inattention factor, mainly due to the use of on-board equipment such as smartphones and GPS, is responsible for 15% of fatal accidents. This behavior is particularly widespread during commutes. Authorities fear an increase in these incidents with the proliferation of digital devices in vehicles. Finally, drowsiness and fatigue at the wheel are responsible for 13% of fatal accidents, with an increased risk during the night, between 1 a.m. and 9 a.m.
The safety of personnel on call remains a priority for motorway companies, despite a worrying assessment in 2023. Faced with 144 accidents involving agents, including 22 injuries and 2 deathssafety measures must be strengthened. Awareness campaigns are increasing, especially during the holiday period, to remind drivers of the importance of respecting the “safety corridor”. This system requires drivers to move into the left lane when approaching a vehicle parked on the emergency lane.
