Currently, around 4% of young French people aged 18 to 30 declare themselves “vegetarians”. In short: they eat neither meat nor fish, but continue to consume eggs, milk, cream… unlike vegans (who are also called “vegans”) who have given up on all products of animal origin (including wool, leather, etc.).
Vegetarians, avoid ultra-processed products!
Should you become a vegetarian to take care of your health? On this question, not all scientific studies agree: some however assert (with a high level of evidence) that vegetarians have a lower than average cardiovascular and metabolic risk.
Provided, of course, that you avoid ultra-processed products, which are so numerous in the “vegetarian/vegan” sections of supermarkets…
Exactly: in a video recently published on Instagram, Dr. William Berrebi (who is a gastroenterologist and hepatologist) advises us against 2 food additives often found in products labeled “vegetarian”.
Chocolate mousse and almond milk to avoid
First additive to leak, E407 (or “carrageenan”) : “it increases the risk of chronic inflammatory bowel disease (such as Crohn’s disease) and the risk of food allergy via intestinal dysbiosis and microbiota imbalance” underlines the gastroenterologist. We find (for example) E407 in the “Gourmet and vegetable” coconut milk chocolate mousse from the Andros brand.
Second “widely used” additive according to the doctor, E412 (or “guar gum”). “It can cause much more acute things, notably allergic phenomena such as angioedema or anaphylactic shock.” explains Dr. William Berrebi. It is found (in particular) in the Almond vegetable milk without organic sugars from the Bjorg brand.
“Even plant-based foods can be bad for your health!“concludes the doctor.
