2024: How to signal and how to stay in the lane if you are going forward at the roundabout

Many drivers do not know how they should stay in the lane, nor how to signal when going in the forward direction at the roundabout. Traffic rules in these types of intersections changed in 2023.

When they are about to turn left or right, drivers are obliged to signal their intention to change direction. And, after giving priority to those who have this right, they can continue their movement.

But when you’re going ahead at a roundabout, how do you signal?

In which situations you are obliged to signal

Signaling the direction in which you are going to move is intended to prevent traffic accidents.

Drivers of vehicles are obliged to signal changes in direction of travel, overtaking, stopping and starting“, establishes Art. 116 of the Highway Code.

Also, when turning the vehicle, you have the obligation to signal.

How to signal and how to stay in the lane if you are going forward at the roundabout

The traffic law was amended last year, and establishes that the traffic in the roundabout is assimilated to the traffic rules in the lanes.

In the case of roundabout intersections, drivers must comply with lane traffic rules, having the obligation to signal in time to leave the intersection and ensure that they can do so without disrupting traffic or endangering the safety of other road users”, the Highway Code provides in Art 107, point 1 (1).

This means that drivers must signal when changing from one lane to another in the roundabout, but not if they continue to travel in the forward direction.

If I’m in lane two at the roundabout, I signal right, give priority to those traveling in lane one, and then I can leave the intersection. If I’m going in the forward direction, I’m in lane one before entering the intersection. And then, if I continue moving in the forward direction, I don’t have to signal anymore. The left or right signal is given only when a change of direction is made“, explained the police officer Octavian Perțea for ProMotor.

Therefore, drivers should know, before entering the roundabout, the direction of travel in which they will go. If they are turning left or turning, they must be in the second or higher lane. If they go forward or to the right, drive in lane one.

When they are in lane one and continue to travel in the forward direction, they do not need to signal. However, if they are going to turn right or left, they are obliged to activate the relevant signaling.
