During last New Year’s Eve, the Netherlands again wished each other a Happy New Year en masse via KPN’s mobile network. Last year’s mobile data record was easily broken: 551 terabytes of mobile data were used, more than last year. The number of text messages sent decreased again compared to last year. The number of telephone calls increased slightly this year.
The network’s peak load was between 00:05 and 00:10, both for mobile data use and for calling and texting.
About 0.9 million text messages were sent between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m., which is again less than the year before (1 million). The number of telephone calls increased slightly compared to previous years. More than 3.4 million telephone calls were made this year (compared to 3.2 million last year).
KPN processed more data traffic on its network in 2024 than the year before. The busiest day (especially in terms of downloads) was on Friday, July 5, thanks to 2 quarter-finals at the European Football Championship (Spain-Germany and France-Portugal). The arrival of Sinterklaas at schools on December 5 resulted in a clear increase in the upload of photos and videos. And the most calls were made on December 11, when WhatsApp experienced a malfunction. Max Verstappen also caused a peak in downloads during the race in Las Vegas on November 24, which he won, making him world champion for the fourth time in a row.
