A woman in Sao Paulo, Brazil, who visited a hospital with abdominal pain, was found to have a large piece of cloth left over from a previous surgery, sparking public outrage. The exact nature of the cloth, whether it was a medical towel, gauze, or surgical pad, has not been determined. The patient is preparing legal action against the hospital, claiming it was medical malpractice during the surgery.

According to a recent report by Brazilian news outlet G1, Mariel Vidal, 58, from São Paulo, began experiencing abdominal pain in November 2023. She also began losing weight for no reason. She had already been diagnosed with colon cancer in July 2022 and had undergone a colostomy at the Beneficencia Portuguesa de Santos Hospital in Santos City.

Colostomy is a surgical procedure in which an artificial colostomy bag is inserted to allow patients with poor bowel movements to excrete waste out of the body. Mariel also had a hole made in her abdomen, one end of her intestines was taken out, and a colostomy bag was connected.

When the cancer symptoms reappeared in 2023, I had already completed colon cancer treatment, so I went to the hospital wondering if the cancer had recurred. However, no problems were found in the X-ray examination, so I had to return.

Although she had occasional abdominal pain of unknown origin, she was unable to do anything because there was nothing wrong with the test results. Then, on July 20, Mariel was checking her ostomy bag and discovered that an unknown substance was protruding. When Mariel went to the hospital, the medical staff initially said that the substance was dried stool after seeing her ostomy bag. They did not take any special measures.

But when Mariel returned from the hospital, she found this strange and began pulling at the substance with her fingers. The long substance that came out was a 20cm long piece of cloth.

Mariel said, “I thought it wasn’t stool, so I put my hand into the stoma and started pulling the material out, and it kept coming out, and it was a very large piece of cloth. It turned out to be the cloth left over from the colostomy I had two years ago.” He is currently hospitalized, and the hospital is checking to see if he needs further surgery.

Mariel’s daughter Stephanie told Brazilian news outlet G1 about the incident: “If you have a family member with cancer, you know how hard it is, so our first emotion was anger. We are relieved that the cancer has not returned, but we also wonder how the surgery was done.” She was furious at the doctors who initially performed the surgery.

Mariel Vidal’s family is preparing legal action against the hospital. The hospital said, “The doctor who operated on the patient in 2022 is no longer working at the hospital,” and “We are continuing to support Vidal’s recovery.”
