◆Dongnam Area Nuclear Medicine Institute holds an agreement ceremony and groundbreaking ceremony for the Cardiocerebrovascular Center
On the afternoon of the 15th, the Southeast Area Nuclear Medicine Institute will hold an agreement ceremony and groundbreaking ceremony for the ‘Cardiovascular Center Construction Project’ to strengthen the role of public medical care in the region by reinforcing critical and essential medical care in the southeast area.
The Cardiocerebrovascular Center construction project is a local government-led project to strengthen essential medical care, with Busan Metropolitan City providing 100 million won, Gijang-gun providing 3.2 billion won, and Ulju-gun Seosaeng-myeon Residents’ Council providing 2 billion won. Busan has already become a super-aging society with the ratio of the population aged 65 years old at 23.5%, and the Gijang and Seosaeng areas where the Southeast Atomic Energy Medical Center is located have a larger elderly population than the national average, but there is no cardio-cerebrovascular center nearby, so it is necessary to stay for more than 30 minutes. The situation was such that I had to go to a distant medical institution. Accordingly, through this project, we plan to eliminate blind spots in essential medical care.
The Cardiovascular Center is scheduled to operate normally from March 2025 through construction and securing manpower. The Cardiocerebrovascular Disease Center will be built on the 3rd floor of the hospital building of the Dongnam Atomic Energy Medical Center, and the intensive care unit and operating room are right next to it, allowing for more rapid treatment of critically ill patients. The center, comprised of medical staff from the departments of cardiology, neurosurgery, neurology, and rehabilitation medicine, will be equipped with cutting-edge equipment such as the latest angiography, surgical microscope, and MRI.

Professor Youngjoo Lee of the Breast Surgery Department of Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital, Catholic University of Korea, received the Doosan Yonkang Surgical Academic Award at the Korean Surgical Society conference held on November 2, once again being recognized for his outstanding contributions to breast cancer research.
Professor Lee, who received the award in the Journal of Korean Surgical Society section, conducted the research as a co-first author with Professor Seungpil Jeong of Korea University Anam Hospital, and the corresponding author is Professor Suyeon Bae of Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital. The title of the winning paper is ‘Analysis of the prognosis of breast cancer according to the time of recurrence,’ and it is a study that analyzed the effect of breast cancer subtype and time of recurrence on survival rate in 2,730 patients.
Breast cancer is largely classified into four subtypes depending on the overexpression of hormone receptors and HER2, and treatment methods are different for each subtype, and the timing and method of recurrence also differ. This study analyzed the impact of early recurrence within 5 years after diagnosis and late recurrence after 5 years on survival rate. As a result, early recurrence was identified as a factor that worsened prognosis in all subtypes, whereas late recurrence was found to be a significant negative prognostic factor only in the luminal B subtype. Therefore, we concluded that active and careful long-term follow-up and effective treatment are needed for patients with luminal B subtype even after 5 years.
