28 Years Later: The $75 Million Movie Shot on an iPhone 15

The movie “28 Years Later” of Danny Boyle filmed in the summer με iPhone 15 Pro Max, which makes it the biggest film shot on a smartphone, on a budget 75 million dollars. The film, which is expected to be released in June 2025, is a sequel to “28 Days Later” (2002) and “28 Weeks Later” (2007). Starring Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Ralph Fiennes. Boyle works with cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle, with whom they won an Oscar for “Slumdog Millionaire” in 2009.

The iPhone 15 Pro Max was used as the main camera of the filmwith the support of special adapters, such as the Beast camera, which allows the use of DSLR lenses. Boyle’s choice to use an iPhone is part of a technological development, as the first film in the series was shot with the then-innovative digital camera Canon XL-1. The iPhone 15 Pro Max can record video in 4K using the ProRes codec, offering great flexibility in the processing stage.

The use of smartphones in film production is not unheard of, as evidenced by films such as “Tangerine” and “Unsane”, but the big budget and wide distribution of “28 Years Later” make it unique. Also, the iPhone 15 Pro Max was used in some scenes with special cameras adapted to animals, while Apple provided technical support during filming.

The upcoming film 28 Days Later, which will be the start of a new trilogy, is expected to boost Apple’s presence in the film industry.
