A bus carrying 40 passengers fell off a 200-metre-deep cliff early Tuesday morning while travelling from Lima (Peru) to the southern city of Ayacucho. The accident caused the death of 29 people, 27 of whom died at the scene and the remaining 2 after being taken to the Regional Hospital of Ayacucho.
Regional Health Director John Tinco also confirmed that 15 other injured people have arrived at various hospitals in the region after being treated by the health services at the time. According to official sources, the surviving victims do not have serious injuries.
The causes of the accident are unknown
The accident took place at 5 a.m. in a rural area known as Ccarchuaccpampa. The Peruvian National Police arrived a few minutes later, along with several firefighters and paramedics. Despite the difficulty in accessing the area where the vehicle was found, the rescue teams were able to recover the bodies of the 27 victims who died on the spot. However, the causes of the incident are still unknown.
For his part, the Minister of Transport and Communications, Raúl Pérez Reyes, has emphasized the importance of continuing with the work of supervising speed, technical inspections and compliance with the driving schedule of drivers, since the main cause of this type of accident is “the imprudence of drivers,” as he has stated.
