It appears that the exhaust gas is not discharged to the outside.
“Thought chamber, increase temperature and experiment”
All deceased researchers… 1 person is a partner
Ministry of Employment and Labor orders to stop working on the same
On the 19th, an accident occurred where three researchers who were testing vehicle performance at Hyundai Motor Company’s Ulsan plant died from suffocation.
According to the police and Hyundai Motor Company, at 3:19 p.m. on this day, three people, including Mr. A in his 40s, Mr. B in his 30s, and Mr. C in his 20s, tried to use the vehicle in the vehicle test booth (chamber) of the Electrification Quality Division near Hyundai Motor Company’s Ulsan Plant 4 in Buk-gu, Ulsan. A report of loss was received. Person A and others were taken to the hospital, but they all died.
At around 12:50 p.m., two hours before the accident, Mr. A and others radioed that they were “doing a test” and entered the chamber to test the driving performance of a gasoline vehicle. However, he did not come out of the chamber for a long time, and a fellow employee who found this strange went into the chamber, found Mr. A and others in a state of suffocation, and reported it to the police. They were each sitting in the driver’s seat, passenger seat, and back seat of the experimental vehicle. The deceased are all researchers. Two people were confirmed to be affiliated with Hyundai Motor Company’s Namyang Research Institute, and one person was confirmed to belong to a partner company.
The chamber is an enclosed space like a painting booth in a maintenance factory. When one vehicle enters, it is large enough for one adult to stand and look around the vehicle. During the test, the thick door closed and did not open. A roller that can drive a vehicle is installed on the floor inside the silver square chamber. These researchers placed the car on rollers and conducted experiments as if it were actually driving inside the car. In the chamber, high-temperature experiments are also conducted to check whether the car can operate in a desert-like environment.
The chamber is equipped with a facility that sucks in exhaust gases and discharges them to the outside like a vacuum cleaner, but the company believes that this facility is not working properly. Carbon monoxide accounts for most of automobile exhaust gases. Carbon monoxide prevents the blood from carrying oxygen. Breathing air containing more than 0.3% carbon monoxide for a long period of time can kill you.
Hyundai Motors employees who heard the news of the accident said in unison, “This is the first time something like this has happened (a suffocation accident).” One senior employee expressed regret to the reporter, saying, “(Today) they said they conducted an experiment by raising the temperature in the accident chamber.”
The police are investigating whether the company complied with safety rules and are investigating the exact circumstances of the accident with witnesses. Additionally, an autopsy will be requested from the National Institute of Forensic Science to determine the exact cause of death.
Minister of Employment and Labor Kim Moon-soo expressed condolences and regrets to the bereaved family and ordered the cause and responsibility of the accident to be investigated. After the accident, labor inspectors at the Busan Office and Ulsan Branch, the employment and labor branch offices under the Ministry of Employment and Labor, were dispatched to the scene and ordered work to be stopped for the same work, and are investigating the cause.
Regarding the accident on this day, Hyundai Motor Company said, “We pray for the deceased’s peace in peace and offer our deepest condolences to the bereaved family. We will quickly determine the cause of this accident and actively take necessary measures.” “We will do our best to come up with measures to prevent safety accidents like this from recurring in the future.”
