4 comics to read if you didn’t like the film

Joker: Folie à deux was released last week. A musical tragedy from which many would ultimately have turned out well. The relationship between Harleen Quinzel and Gotham’s prince of crime, however, is not boring. In the comics too, the couple had their moments of glory and their great dramatic arcs.

Joker and Harley’s relationship has always been explosive. From love to hatred, there is only one step, and the poor psychiatrist of Arkham discovers at his expense that loves a crazy clown is not funny every day.

For the release of Folie à deux, Urban comics pulled out all the stops, publishing a very beautiful anthology on the terrible couple of Gotham. Eight stories short, crazy and pessimisticwho each in their own way marked the history of the two characters. Since the beginnings of the young woman in Mad Loveuntil her emancipation in her more recent adventures alongside Poison Ivy, the adventures of Harley Quinn often relegate the Joker to the background.

Dark and intense, Harleen is a diving into the damaged psyche of a promising young doctor who falls in love with Gotham’s biggest criminal. Little by little, the young woman will allow herself to be seduced, then sink into the abyss of madness that is Arkham Asylum, leaving her innocence and her lost illusions there forever. Much less zany and cartoonish than the version by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm, the one shot shines for its graphic mastery as much as for its themes addressed. A perfect adventure for newbies, eager to discover the mythology of Harley Quinn.

Former psychiatrist Harleen Quinzel is not the type of woman to be satisfied with a decent, quiet life. Rather than locking herself away in a dull and orderly life, the young woman prefers the thrill of a forbidden love with the Joker. But by falling, you end up hurting yourself. Starting point for Harley Quinn’s recent evolution in the Batverse, Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti’s run is a declaration of love to a character who is too often mistreated. No more toxic love stories, the character finally decides to stand on her own two feet, and offer herself the bandit life she dreams of. We ask for more, the exercise is so enjoyable.

A classic among classics. The Genesis of Harley Quinn as told by its creators is still as current as ever. Crazy, crazy and eminently cruelthis first adventure of the ambitious Arkham psychiatrist returns to the foundations of the myth, while her path crosses that of the Joker, Batman’s worst enemy. From then on, her destiny belongs entirely to the one that the young woman will call her chick for years to come. Dès lors, elle n’aura plus qu’un objectif : offrir à l’amour de sa vie une mort spectaculaire du Chevalier Noir.
