We know that to help balance blood sugar levels and thus reduce the risk of diabetes, it is important to choose your foods carefully, favoring low GI foods, those rich in fiber and antioxidants.
We also know that water is the best anti-diabetes ally because it helps eliminate excess blood glucose, thus reducing the risk of hyperglycemia.
4 cups of this drink every day
But another drink would have equally protective effects on blood sugar levels. According to researchers at Wuhan University (China) who led a study involving more than a million participants from 8 countries, adults who drink four or more cups of tea (whether black, green or Oolong ) every day, have a risk of type 2 diabetes reduced by 17% over a period of 10 years.
We knew that tea helped reduce the risk of hypertension thanks to its flavonoids (the antioxidant molecules it contains). We therefore learn that tea polyphenols reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes, provided, however, that you drink at least four cups per day.
In fact, people who drink less than 3 cups of tea each day see their risk of diabetes reduced by only 4%.
We rediscover the benefits of the “cup of tea”
Previously, an American study had shown that drinking at least two cups of black tea every day reduced the risk of mortality from all causes. For brain health, green tea is best, thanks to an amino acid called theanine which boosts your cognitive functions.
In short, we are rediscovering the benefits of the “cup of tea” dear to our British neighbors. But be careful not to drink your tea too hot since another study showed that drinking too hot tripled the risk of throat cancer and esophageal cancer.
