4 reasons to see Nobody Wants This on Netflix, the best romantic comedy of 2024

Notice to romcom fans: Nobody Wants This is the little fall candy we’ve been waiting for. While the series is already a hit on Netflix, here are 4 reasons to succumb to the charm of this comedy with Kristen Bell and Adam Brody.

If you grew up in the 2000s, it’s very likely that your first emotions, series version, focused on two stars in particular: Kristen Bell, rebel detective in Veronica Marsand Adam Brody, awkward geek in Newport Beach. Needless to say, when a romantic comedy was announced, bringing together this dream duo, my little teenage heart immediately melted.

And good news: Nobody Wants Thisavailable since September 26, 2024 on Netflix, perfectly meets my expectations, and has already established itself as the best romcom of 2024. Here are 4 reasons to let yourself be carried away by the comforting autumnal sweetness of this Netflix series.

Kristen Bell + Adam Brody = feu d’artifice d’amour

Noah, a handsome rabbi, and Joanne, a podcaster specializing in sexuality, fall in love. It might seem like a bad joke at the beginning, but it is nevertheless the improbable pitch of Nobody Wants This. All this could have turned into a disaster, we grant you that. However, this romcom is a little marvel. It must be said that the chemistry between Kristen Bell and Adam Brody is reaching new heights.

Apart from their rather attractive appearance, let’s not hide it, the two actors exchange dozens of tasty punchlines per minute, developing a mental connection just as sexy as their physical proximity. At the same time adorable, vulnerable, hilarious and confident, Noah and Joanne form the couple that we no longer expected, mixing the repartee of Veronica Mars and the sensitivity of Seth Cohen in Newport Beach.

The best first kiss in the history of romantic series

Fans still dream about it, even watch the extract on repeat since the series was released (we see you). For everyone else, get ready: you’re about to experience the best first kiss in television history. Yes, even in front of those of Rachel and Ross in Friends or Luke and Lorelai in Gilmore Girls.

Noah and Joanne then stroll down the street, ice cream in hand, like in any good self-respecting romantic comedy. They discuss how they still haven’t kissed. The young rabbi then adds a clarification: they did not encore kissed.

Confident, he asks Joanne to give him his ice cream, then put down his bag, before kissing her for a long time. Having become viral, the sequence was carefully thought out in advance by the creator, Erin Foster. Comedian Adam Brody even revealed to Entertainment Weekly that in the script, the scene was described, for Joanne, as “the best kiss of his life”. It’s hard to set higher standards. But it must be admitted that, on the spectator side, the bet was largely successful.

A romantic comedy… really funny

We know: in general, romcoms mainly play a role of comfort as tender and dripping as a sweet marshmallow. But in the expression “romantic comedy”, we too often retain the “romance” part, forgetting the part that is supposed to really make us laugh.

With the exception of British comedies by Richard Curtis like Love Actually or Four weddings and a funeralwhich have aged well since their release, the romcoms have thus lost their spice over the years.

Nobody Wants This comes to rectify the situation, with dialogues with impeccable timing and subtly funny situations. Of course, not all the jokes hit the mark: the Netflix series is not perfection incarnate either.

But over the course of its ten episodes, it still manages to make us really laugh in front of our screen, not just blow our noses happily after a good punchline. Just for that, Nobody Wants Thiswith its gallery of brilliant secondary characters, deserves the title of the most fun comedy of this fall 2024.

A truly healthy romantic relationship

On-screen representations can change lives, that’s a fact. Unfortunately, when it comes to romantic comedies, their track record all too often comes down to propagating false ideas about straight couples and how they should function. We can no longer count the stories based on stalking that end well or men who force themselves to win the favors of their beloved.

Nobody Wants This is taking the opposite path of this harmful trend for our little artichoke hearts. The obstacles in Joanne and Noah’s path never come from their characters or their desires, but rather from outside.

From the first episode, there is no doubt that their relationship is consensual, on both sides, and that their chemistry is indeed present. The two lovers thus start off on a healthy basis to build their story. If Joanne has any insecurities, Noah immediately reassures them.

And if the latter shamefully hides his girlfriend from the eyes of his Jewish community, deeply hurting Joanne, he immediately recognizes his wrongs, trying to repair them as he should. Eventually, Nobody Wants This represents everything that romcom fans have needed for so many years: a healthy relationship to project themselves towards on screen, to better move forward in real life.

The verdict

Even before its release, Nobody Wants This already left with a serious argument in its favor: the unexpected reunion between the two stars of the 2000s, Kristen Bell (Veronica Mars) et Adam Brody (Newport Beach). And suffice to say that the Netflix series does not disappoint. Without fundamentally renewing the genre of romantic comedies, the ten episodes still offer us two welcome gifts: humor perfectly balanced with romance, as well as a truly healthy relationship between two individuals who love each other. And just for that, Nobody Wants This fully deserves its title of best romcom of the year 2024.
