Jeong Kwan-Jang defeated GS Caltex with a set score of 3-2 (23-25 25-20 23-25 25-17 15-10) in the women’s semifinal of the 2024 Tongyeong-Dodram Cup Professional Volleyball Competition held at Tongyeong Gymnasium on the 5th.
Cheong Kwan-Jang, who advanced to the semifinals by finishing second in Group B (2 wins, 1 loss), advanced to the finals of the cup competition for the first time in five years with a thrilling comeback win over GS Caltex, which took first place in Group A with three wins in all matches.
This is the first time in six years since 2018 that Cheong Kwan-Jang is challenging to win the cup competition, and he is aiming to become the top player for the third time in his career.
On the other hand, GS Caltex, which suffered a come-from-behind defeat, failed to win its third consecutive cup competition.
Cheong Kwan-Jang’s twin guns Mega (21 points) and Bukiric (21 points) combined for 42 points to lead the team to the finals. Seungju Pyo helped with 17 points.
GS Caltex Silva exploded with 32 points, but the shine faded due to the team’s loss.
GS Caltex succeeded in taking the lead after a close first set.
GS Caltex, which was trailing at 19-22, tied the score at 23-23 thanks to Wyler’s blocking, Silva’s serve score, and the opponent’s error. Then, Bukiric turned the game around by making a mistake in attack, and Wyler settled the first set with an open score.
Cheong Kwan-Jang brought the game back to square one in the second set.
Leading 12-10, Cheong Kwan-Jang widened the gap by scoring 5 points in a row. Afterwards, Cheong Kwan-Jang, who reached the 20-point mark first, reached the set point with consecutive scores from Bukirici, Seung-Ju Pyo, and Hye-Sun Yeom, and balanced the set score when GS Caltex Kwon Min-Ji’s serve went off the line.
However, GS Caltex took the lead again.
GS Caltex, who tied the score at 16-21 by scoring 5 points in a row, turned the game around with Oh Se-yeon’s blocking. Then, after taking an advantageous position thanks to Oh Se-yeon’s fast attack and Kwon Min-ji’s quick open, Silva scored a point in time to win the third set.
Cheong Kwan-Jang, who was pushed to the edge, overcame the crisis and took the game to 5 sets.
At 16-14 in the 4th set, Seung-Joo Pyo opened and blocking by Seon-Woo Lee and Ho-Young Jeong led Jeong Kwan-Jang, who took a 5-point lead, and maintained a good momentum. They ran away with a 23-16 score thanks to Lee Seon-woo’s score, and with Park Eun-jin and Lee Seon-woo’s consecutive scores, they took the 4th set.
At the end, Gwanjang Cheong laughed.
Led by the attacks of Bukirich and Mega, Cheong Kwan Jang dominated GS Caltex throughout the 5 sets. At 13-9, match point was reached thanks to Bukiric’s block, and the game ended with Mega’s time difference score.
