A 43-year-old man has lost his life after falling more than 300 meters from Germany’s highest mountain, the Zugspitze.
This is according to the local police in the area.
On Friday, the man was in the process of climbing the approximately three kilometer high mountain with a friend when he lost his footing and fell.
He was reportedly killed instantly.
According to the authorities, this is a solo accident, and there is no suspicion of a crime.
The man’s body was not located until Saturday morning due to stormy weather.
The Zugspitze, located in the state of Bavaria, is part of the Wetterstein mountain range on the border between Germany and Austria.
There are three different cable cars to the top of the mountain, but the Zugspitze is also popular with mountaineers.
The surveyor Josef Naus was the first to overcome the Zugspitze and reach the summit together with his assistant and a guide in 1820.
One of the most popular routes goes via the Eastern Alps along a route known as Jubiläumsgrat – in Danish jubilee route.
It is also possible to spend the night on the mountain itself – for example in the cabin Münchner Haus on the western summit of the Zugspitze.
As proven by the 43-year-old man, it is not without danger to climb the Zugspitze, which has claimed the lives of several mountaineers over the years.
As recently as June, a 34-year-old person was found dead on the Höllentalferner glacier in the western part of Wetterstein.
Later that month, a 40-year-old Pole lost his life after falling several hundred meters – also at Höllentalferner.
It is also possible to ski at the Zugspitze, which has a total of 20 kilometers of pistes.
Many probably know the mountain for its iconic golden cross on top.
The cable cars are believed to carry around half a million people to the top each year.
