5 smartphones to look forward to in 2025

Best wishes! The new year has started, which means that after all the looking back, it is time to look ahead. Which smartphones are we curious about in 2025? We list five of them!

Smartphones we can look forward to in 2025

Every now and then a completely new device comes along. However, most smartphones that we expect in 2025 will build on an older phone. This means we can predict fairly well which ones are coming. The smartphones below are, at least potentially, true champions. Are you reading along?

Samsung Galaxy S25-serie

The release of the Samsung Galaxy S25 series is quite close. This will most likely take place at the end of January. That’s why we already know a lot about these smartphones. We even wrote a separate article with our expectations of the S25 devices.

In short, we expect three different phones again. The normal S25 has a 6.2-inch screen, the S25 Plus has a 6.7-inch display and the S25 Ultra has a 6.9-inch screen. According to rumors, they all run on a Snapdragon 8 Elite chip, the fastest processor at the moment. With all three you can also count on seven years of software support.

The Galaxy S25 Ultra in particular gets a number of nice upgrades. The updated design, with thinner screen edges and curved corners, makes the flagship look more like its cheaper brothers. The Ultra also has a new 50 megapixel wide-angle lens. In addition, it retains its 200 megapixel main camera and the two telephoto lenses with which you can zoom in 3x and 5x.

With the S25 and S25 Plus, we expect fewer improvements, apart from thinner screen edges. For example, the 50 megapixel main camera, 12 megapixel wide-angle lens and 10 megapixel telephoto lens are the same as those of their predecessors. Samsung may use AI to let you take better photos.

Later in the year we expect a fourth member of the family: the Galaxy S25 Slim. As the name suggests, this is an extra thin version. The device is nevertheless said to have very good cameras.

Google Pixel 10-serie

Google will release the affordable Pixel 9a in March, but we don’t expect the real hits until August. Then the Pixel 10 series is on the menu. Because that will take some time, rumors are scarce at the moment.

We are again counting on four different variants: the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL and the Pixel 10 Fold, a foldable device. They all run on a Tensor G5 chip. That is the first processor that Google designs entirely itself. It should therefore be a lot faster and more efficient than the first four Tensors. That is necessary, because in terms of pure computing power, Google lags behind the competition.

In any case, a higher charging speed is on our wish list. This remains on the low side at Google. It would also be nice if the Pros could expect new camera hardware again.

In recent years, there has been a lot of emphasis on all kinds of AI applications, but the quality of the photos themselves has stagnated a bit. The wide-angle lens and telephoto camera in particular could use a larger sensor.

Nothing Phone (3)

Actually, we thought that the Nothing Phone (3) would be released as early as 2024. Nothing probably thought so too, but the rise of AI threw a spanner in the works. CEO Carl Pei said that he first wants to incorporate artificial intelligence into Nothing OS, the company’s software shell. This would drastically change the way you communicate with your smartphone.

The Phone (3) may therefore become a completely different type of device than the Phone (2). Unfortunately, little is known about the specifications. We are counting on a high-end smartphone with slightly older hardware. Perhaps it runs on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, the fastest chip from last year, allowing Nothing to reduce the price a bit.

The phone undoubtedly has a distinctive design, with many LED lights on the back. These will flash when you receive notifications, for example.

OnePlus Nord 5

The OnePlus Nord 4 was one of the best midrangers of 2024. With its luxurious metal housing, fast processor and large battery, the device is a nice total package. We are therefore very curious about its successor, which will probably be released in the summer.

We haven’t read many rumors yet. The Nord 5 will probably have a faster processor again, but in our opinion that is not necessarily necessary. It would be nicer if it had an e-SIM, for example, so that you can easily add a digital SIM card online while on holiday.

Although the Nord 4 has an excellent main camera, the 8 megapixel wide-angle lens is a lot less impressive. A new sensor would therefore be very welcome. Unfortunately, OnePlus has been reserving telephoto lenses for its most expensive smartphones for years. Even with the Nord 5 you will most likely not be able to zoom in without losing quality.

Motorola Razr 60 (Ultra)

In 2025 we of course expect a number of smartphones with a so-called folding screen. There are rumors that OnePlus is working on such a device, but Motorola will also contribute. These are successors to the Motorola Razr 50 and Razr 50 Ultra.

These were solid flip phones, but there is still plenty of room for improvement, especially with the Ultra. For example, despite its high recommended retail price of 1,199 euros, it did not have the fastest chip at the time. In our review we further complained about the substandard cameras, limited battery life and the update policy. Three Android upgrades and four years of security patches are not enough in this price range.

We were very happy with the large second screen on the outside of the Razr 50 devices. This allows you to text and email without opening the smartphones. Enough reason to look forward to Razr 60 and Razr 60 Ultra.
