600 m long. The new bridge will improve travel to the Czech Republic

PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe SA is modernizing the E 65 railway line on the Zabrzeg – Zebrzydowice section. The key element of the investment will be construction of an over 600-meter railway bridge in Zebrzydowice.

The structure of the facility will run over the street. Botaniczna, Hallera, as well as by the breeding pond and the Piotrówka River. Its construction will allow for the correction of the railway line route. This will improve rail travel towards the border with the Czech Republic and from Zebrzydowice to Zabrzeg and further towards Goczalkowice, Tychy and Katowice.

In fact, apart from its length, little is known about the designed structure. Looking at the photo, you can guess that it will be this beam bridgewhich is actually the simplest and cheapest construction. Consists of horizontal beam supported by pillars. No information was provided about the height above the water surface, the number of pillars or the distance between them.

The bridge under construction is part of a larger project worth PLN 1.7 billion. Construction works started in mid-May. Their completion is expected in 2027.

Thanks to the investment, travel from Zabrzeg to Zebrzydowice and the border with the Czech Republic will be more efficient. Importantly, rail accessibility for people with limited mobility will also be increased.

As a result of the project, railway lines will be adapted to the interoperability requirements of the trans-European transport network TEN-T:
– increasing the maximum speed of passenger trains (160 km/h) and freight trains (120 km/h),
– obtaining the maximum train length (740 m)
– obtaining a permissible load of 221 kN/axis.

The E 65 bus runs from Gdynia through Warsaw, Zawiercie, Katowice and Zebrzydowice. It is a transport route of international importance and, together with other corridors, creates a coherent transport system that was defined at the 2nd Pan-European Transport Conference in Crete in March 1994.

The E 65 railway line is actually the only route currently connecting the Baltic countries with countries located on the Adriatic Sea and the Balkans. It is true that there are several other routes, but they run through Russia, Belarus and Ukraine (Kiev, Lviv and Odessa), which makes it difficult to use the connections in the current situation.

It is on the E 65 route that you can travel with the Express InterCity Premium operated by the ED250 from the Pendolino family, which can reach speeds of up to 200 km/h in places. Trains can also reach such high speeds for Polish conditions on the Gdynia-Warsaw route, which has already been modernized.
