7500 accused in 4 cases in the incident of clashes in the city

Four cases have been registered in connection with the clashes between the police, Chhatra League and Jubo League with the protesting students in Chittagong demanding reform of quota in government jobs. In these cases, about 7,500 people have been made unknown accused.

These cases were filed on Wednesday (July 17) morning. The police have already arrested several people by conducting raids at various places.

These four cases have been filed in two police stations of the city. Among them, one case was filed in Khulshi Police Station and the remaining three in Panchlaish Police Station.

Newly appointed Chittagong Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md. Saiful Islam confirmed this information to the media.

Santosh Kumar Chakma, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Panchlaish Police Station said that three separate cases have been filed in Panchlaish Police Station regarding the clash in Muradpur area on Tuesday afternoon. Accused in these cases are about seven thousand. Out of these three cases, the police have done two. The other was done by the mother of one of the injured. The plaintiff in two police cases is SI Deepak Dewan of Panchlaish police station.

He also said that 6,000 to 6,500 people have been made unknown accused in the case of the three deaths. 150 persons have been named as unidentified accused in the Explosives Act case. Sumi Dhar, the mother of an injured person named Emon Dhar, has filed a case as the plaintiff. 150 unknown accused have been made in that case.

Chittagong Metropolitan Police Additional Deputy Police Commissioner (PR) Kazi Md. Tarek Aziz said, another case has been filed in Khulshi Police Station regarding the clash. A relative of an injured person filed this case as plaintiff. In this case, 500 to 600 people have been named unknown accused by mentioning one name.

Chittagong Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md. Saiful Islam said that a total of four cases have been registered in connection with the clash. There will be more cases. Attempts are being made to identify those involved in the incident by looking at CCTV camera footage. I have given instructions to the police officers to ensure that no innocent people are accused in these cases.

Three people were killed and hundreds injured in the clashes on Tuesday. The deceased are – Md. Omar Farooq (32), Wasim Akram (23) and Faisal Ahmed Shanto (24). Farooq is an employee of a local furniture store and Chandina Upazila of Comilla. Dulal’s son.

Wasim is the joint convenor of students of Sociology Department of Chittagong College and College Branch Chhatra Dal. He is the son of Shafiul Alam of Mehernama village of Pekua upazila of Cox’s Bazar. Faisal is a student of management department of Omargani MES College, Chittagong.
