More than half of all residents, 7,648, have resigned. More than 90% of residents at the ‘Big 5 Hospitals’ have resigned. The government has set the number of residents to be recruited in the second half of the year at 7,707. The Ministry of Health and Welfare disclosed the status of residents’ resignations at training hospitals and the results of applications for residents’ recruitment in the second half of the year on the 18th.

According to this, out of 151 hospitals that hired residents as of the 17th, 110 hospitals submitted the results of resignation processing, and 7,648 residents, or 56.5% of 14,531 residents, resigned (including those who gave up their employment). However, 41 hospitals did not submit the results of resignation processing in violation of the government’s policy of processing the resignations of residents who had not returned.

Among the 3,068 interns, 2,950, or 96.2%, resigned, and among the 10,463 residents, 44.9%, or 4,698, resigned.

Bundang Cha Hospital, Busan Baek Hospital, Kangbuk Samsung Hospital, Dong-A University Hospital, and Gangnam Severance Hospital also had resignation rates exceeding 90%.

The training hospitals applied for a total of 7,707 resident positions in the second half of this year: 2,557 interns and 5,150 residents.

Seoul National University Hospital applied for recruitment of 191 people, which is 25.8% of the number of dropouts. The application rate to the number of dropouts was 4.3% for Seoul National University Bundang Hospital, 1.6% for Busan National University Hospital, 51.7% for Korea University Medical Center, and 81.3% for Seoul Asan Medical Center. In comparison, Catholic Central Medical Center applied for recruitment of 1,019 people out of 881 dropouts, which is 115.7% for the application rate to the number of dropouts, Severance Hospital 115%, and Samsung Seoul Hospital 103.2%.

The Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Training Environment Evaluation Committee plan to conduct a verification process on the second half recruitment numbers applied for by training hospitals until the 19th, post a recruitment notice on the 22nd, and proceed with the recruitment process until August.

Jeong Yoon-soon, director of the Ministry of Health and Welfare’s Health and Medical Policy Bureau, said, “We have decided to apply special training provisions so that many residents can return to their training courses in the second half of this year’s recruitment,” and “We will take measures to ensure that returning residents can continue their training normally and minimize the impact on the timing of obtaining specialist qualifications.”
