At the European Championship 2024, he was the captain of the Germans, who advanced to the quarter-finals on home soil. The DPA agency informed about it.
“After weeks of reflection, I came to the conclusion that it was time to close the national team chapter. When I made my debut in the most valuable jersey in 2011, I never dreamed of what I would be able to achieve.
I look at my performance in the national team with great pride. I consider it the highlight that I was able to wear the captain’s armband at the home European championship,” wrote Gündogan on Instagram.
German national team coach Julian Nagelsmann highlighted Gündogan’s contribution to the team. “I am very proud that Ilkay was the captain of the German national team.
He performed this task excellently and had a great merit in the fact that young players were able to work in the team.
He helped them with his valuable advice and experience,” Nagelsmann said of the 33-year-old Barcelona player.
