Repeated efforts, trauma or wear due to time: you are looking for solutions to relieve your painful joints. Active ingredients of natural origin can help you regain better joint comfort. Here are a few.
Sensation of being locally “rusty”, repetitive movement or wear and tear over time… when a joint becomes sensitive, and even more so if it swells, the first thing to do is of course to put it to rest. Then, simple treatments sometimes prove very effective for relieve painful joints.
Natural solutions to relieve painful joints
Both heat and cold promote rapid relief of inflammation.
A cold compress to soothe joint pain
- Pour a handful of ice cubes into a washcloth.
- Apply the latter directly to the painful area.
- Hold it in place with a dry cloth or scarf, and leave to act for at least a quarter of an hour.
If you have the impression that the cold increases the pain, stop immediately! Try one of the heat applications below instead.
Hot option: compressed potatoes
- Boil potatoes
- Wrap them in a clean cloth, then crush them roughly.
- Surround the painful joint with this preparation, and leave to act for 30 minutes.
Also consider a hot water bottle, to which you simply apply your finger, wrist, or toe as long as the heat persists!
Also very effective: Chinese balm!
Used for millennia in Chinese medicine, it effectively relieves joint pain.
Also very effective: mud!
Get yourself a thermal mud compress. Heat it, place it on the painful area and leave it to act for between 30 and 45 minutes.
Relieve joint inflammation, consider herbal compresses
- Prepare a chamomile infusion, and let it become lukewarm.
- Dip a compress in it, wring it out, then place it on and around the joint that hurts.
- Leave on for half an hour.
- Repeat several times a day if necessary.
Harpagophytum or devil’s claw is traditionally recognized for joint comfort, thanks to the harpagosides contained in its roots. Horsetail, for its part, has remineralizing active ingredients, rich in silica, known to contribute to the cartilage resistance.

- Mix 2 teaspoons of powdered ginger and one of turmeric.
- Add a little hot water and mix to form a thick paste.
- Spread this paste on a cotton fabric and fold it.
- Apply it to the painful area.
Hold it with a strip, and leave it on all night.
Against osteoarthritis, think about the virtues of clay
Mix powdered clay with hot water until you have a thick paste. Use a wooden or plastic utensil for this, but never a metal one!
Spread the dough obtained in a layer of 1 to 2 centimeters on gauze or paper towels. Fold the gauze – or paper towel – in half, and apply to the area to be treated.
Wrap with a dry cloth, and cover everything with a shawl or wool blanket. Keep the poultice on until the clay has completely cooled.
Rinse with warm water.
Essential oils for painful joints
As for essential oils, in case of joint painthey are, once again, of precious help. Provided, of course, that you are not pregnant!
Two preparations to relieve pain
- Pour 5 drops of lemon eucalyptus essential oil into 10 ml of arnica oil
- Mix well.
- Apply by lightly rubbing the painful area(s) 1 to 2 times a day.

- Mix everything well.
- Apply to painful areas.

Native to Madagascar and also called Cinnamomum camphora CT cineole, ravintsara grows wild in tropical rainforests and can reach 15 meters.
Calm joint problems amplified by the cold
To obtain a softening and relaxing oil:
- Pour 15 drops of juniper essential oil, 15 drops of rosemary essential oil and 5 drops of lemon essence into 50 ml of a vegetable massage oil.
- Massage painful joints with this preparation.
