Electric car with 1,000 km range will arrive in France later than expected

The Chinese manufacturer Nio, which is responsible for the electric car with a range of 1,000 km and which has made headlines thanks to its battery exchange stations that allow you to “fill up” in less than 3 minutes, is delaying its arrival in France.

It was early 2025 that the Chinese manufacturer Nio was to officially set up shop on French soil. With the new year fast approaching, the manufacturer had not yet given any news, nor even drawn up a list of potential distributors interested in the idea of distributing this young Chinese brand with its very interesting products.

But apparently, Nio has revised its strategy regarding the French marketand the European market more generally. Indeed, Nio has decided to delay its arrival in France in order to take the pulse for the future. What’s next? Quite simply, the consequences of the increase in customs duties for electric cars manufactured in China and imported into Europe.

Tariffs hamper Nio’s ambitions

For Nio, in view of the elements sent to Europe and analyzed, the manufacturer will be penalized an increase of an additional 21.3%in addition to the 10% already agreed from the beginning. Nio is doing better than SAIC, which will be hit with almost 37.8%, but much less well than Tesla and its 7.8% for its Model 3.

Therefore, in addition to a not exactly excellent financial situation, like most young brands, Nio prefers to temper its arrival in France, as confirmed by William Li, the CEO of the brand, who confirmed that Nio was going to “slow down its international expansion”.

A charging network that will continue to develop… but not in France

For this reason, Nio will instead focus on countries where it is already establishedlike Norway or Germany in Europe for example, in particular to strengthen its distribution network and its battery exchange stations allowing you to “fill up” in less than 3 minutes.

Nio currently has almost 50 exchange stations, including 18 in Germany, 11 in Norway, 10 in the Netherlands, 9 in Sweden and one in Denmark.

Let us also recall that Nio markets electric cars with a range of more than 1,000 km, on the Chinese CLTC homologation cycle, and with huge batteries with a capacity of 150 kWh.

For the moment, no date has been announced for an arrival in France, and the observation is the same for the United Kingdom, Ireland and Switzerland.

As a result of this decision, the launch of Nio’s new brands, namely Onvo and Firefly, could also be postponed.
