Chromecast with Google TV: How to free up storage
Are you running out of storage space on your Chromecast with Google TV? Annoying, because it means you can no longer download and install new apps, for example. On a Chromecast, the amount of storage space is very limited anyway.
The Chromecast with Google TV and Chromecast with Google TV (HD) only have 8GB of internal storage, a large portion of which (almost half) is taken up by the system itself. Therefore, there is secretly only 4.4GB available. For comparison, most Android phones these days have 128GB (or more) of storage.
1. Delete apps
Fortunately, there are a few ways to free up storage space on your Chromecast. The easiest is to remove installed apps. For example, do you have applications on the device that you don’t use or hardly use? Then throw them in the trash, because that’s a quick and easy way to free up space. Here’s how:
- On your Chromecast with Google TV, navigate to the gear icon at the top right to open the settings;
- Then go to ‘Apps’;
- Here select ‘View all apps’;
- You will now see a list of all installed apps on your Chromecast. You can remove them by selecting them and then tapping ‘Remove’.
2. Clear app cache
Another way to quickly free up storage space on your Chromecast is to delete app cache. This is temporary data that is stored by applications. This makes apps work better, but cache memory also takes up a lot of space. It is therefore a good idea to delete the app cache of your Chromecast every now and then.
- Open the settings by going to the gear icon at the top right;
- Then select ‘System > Storage > Internal shared storage’;
- Here you will see a block with ‘Cached data’;
- If you press this, you can clear the cache data directly.
By the way, if you clear the app cache, your login details won’t disappear. So you won’t have to log in to your favorite streaming services again. According to Google, clearing the cache can also make Chromecast load media faster.
3. Expand storage space
What you may not know is that you can also expand the storage space of your Chromecast. Just like with many Android phones, but it is a bit more difficult and expensive. First, you need a storage device – such as a USB stick or micro SD card – to provide the media player with more space.
You also need to purchase a USB-C hub. You use this to connect your USB stick or memory card to the Chromecast. Make sure you get a USB-C hub with a USB-C power connection, because you need that to supply the whole thing with energy. Finally, get a USB-C charger that you can plug into the wall socket.
- Plug the Chromecast with Google TV into the HDMI port of your television;
- Now connect the USB-C hub to the Chromecast via the USB-C port of the media player;
- Connect the USB-C charger to the USB hub and plug it into the wall socket;
- Now you can insert a USB stick or memory card into the USB hub to provide more storage.
