(Seoul = Newsis) Reporter Jae-eun Lee = The Seosomun Building (formerly the JoongAng Ilbo Building) in Jung-gu, Seoul, where Ho-Am Art Hall is located, will be reborn as a cultural space with 38 floors above ground and 8 floors underground, including office and sales facilities, as well as a cultural and performance hall.

Seoul City announced on the 18th that it had passed the amendment to the Seosomun Building (Seoul Station-Seodaemun 1·2 District 1st District) urban redevelopment project at the 5th Integrated Review Committee for Redevelopment Projects held on the 13th.

In this deliberation, the ‘architecture, landscape, and transportation fields’ were comprehensively reviewed and passed with the condition of consideration for ensuring the safety of users of the performance hall.

The Seosomun area is expected to be developed into a large-scale urban relaxation space the size of Seoul Plaza by integrating the surrounding business sites and open green spaces, bringing green space, relaxation, and cultural vitality to the somewhat stiff business district.

The existing Ho-Am Art Hall will be renovated into a large-scale classical music performance hall with 1,100 seats and developed into a cultural space with a large green space.

City officials said, “Once the project is completed, it is expected to be reborn as a cultural landmark at the western gateway to the city center.”

The target area is a representative area of Seoul, located in a place that faces Seoul Station Plaza, but due to slow development, 96% of the buildings are old and defective and are over 40 years old.

Through this integrated review, it will be transformed into a new 28-story office facility. The review passed with the opinion to adjust the location of the entrance to the new subway passageway inside the building so that it can be easily found and used conveniently.

The plan is to concentrate neighborhood living facilities for street activation from the first basement floor to the first floor above ground, and to install public offices on the third and fourth floors above ground and donate them so that citizens using nearby business facilities can conveniently access public services.

Additionally, an observatory for citizens will be installed on the top floor and opened to the public to expand its public nature.

Han Byeong-yong, head of the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s Housing Bureau, said, “We are focusing all our capabilities on improving the aging downtown environment and expanding insufficient public facilities through efficient construction plans that take regional conditions into account,” adding, “This will contribute to revitalizing downtown areas and enhancing urban competitiveness in the future.”
