US President Joe Biden has announced that he is withdrawing his candidacy. Biden said in his statement that he will focus on fulfilling his duties as president for the remainder of his term. Biden will make a statement regarding his decision this week.
Biden used the following expressions in his written statement:
My fellow Americans, We have made great progress as a nation over the last three and a half years. Today, America has the strongest economy in the world. We have made historic investments to rebuild our nation, lower prescription drug costs for the elderly, and expand affordable health care to a record number of Americans. We have provided critically needed care to a million veterans who have been exposed to toxic substances. We have passed the first gun safety law in 30 years. We have appointed the first African American woman to the Supreme Court. And we have passed the most important climate legislation in world history. America has never been better positioned to lead than we are today.
I know none of this could have been done without you, the American people. Together, we overcame a once-in-a-century pandemic and the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. We protected and preserved our democracy. And we revitalized and strengthened our alliances around the world. Serving as your President has been the greatest honor of my life. While I intend to seek re-election, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and my country for me to step down from office and focus solely on fulfilling the duties of my presidency for the remainder of my term.
I will talk to the public in more detail about my decision later this week.
For now, let me express my deepest gratitude to everyone who worked so hard to see me re-elected. I want to thank Vice President Kamala Harris for being an extraordinary partner in all of this work. And let me express my heartfelt gratitude to the American people for the faith and trust you have placed in me.
Today I believe what I have always believed: There is nothing America can’t do when we do it together. We just have to remember that we are the United States of America.
