Fraudsters have tricked their customers and are using graphics chips from an older RTX 3080 Ti graphics card. However, you won’t know it when you buy it.
Making one of the best cards on the market without the availability of AD102 chips and under the $1500 price tag is no problem for some companies.
Graphics cards made from refurbished or unofficially sourced components are nothing new, but some shops go even further and offer counterfeit graphics cards that have only used rebranded chips from older cards or faulty memory. This happens even with premium models like the GeForce RTX 4090.
Coincidentally, the AD102, which is the official chip for the RTX 4090, is compatible with the GPU from the previous generation of cards, the GA102 GPU. However, rebranding these chips is also not so easy. It is necessary to remove the original marking by polishing and then apply a new marking with a laser. However, both of these steps can damage the chip.
