The director of the US Secret Service resigns

Politicians from both major US parties urged Cheatle to resign after a 20-year-old gunman wounded the former Republican president on July 13 at a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

“It’s too late, she should have done it at least a week ago,” House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican, told reporters of Cheatle’s resignation.

Still, “I’m glad she’s heeded the call of both Republicans and Democrats,” he added.

Cheatle, speaking before a congressional committee on Monday, acknowledged that the attack on Trump was a failure of the Secret Service.

It was “the most significant operational failure of the Secret Service in decades,” the service’s director said.

Both Republicans and Democrats called for Cheatle’s resignation.

She drew the ire of lawmakers from both parties for refusing to provide specifics about the attack, citing multiple active investigations.

Cheatla was a Secret Service agent for 27 years, but left the service in 2021 to become the head of security for PepsiCo in North America.

He was appointed head of the US Secret Service in 2022 by President Joe Biden.
