Rome Still Burns: The Devastating Fire at Monte Tusculum
The imposing fire was clearly visible even from Rome. From early Tuesday afternoon it began to devastate the woods Of Grottaferrata present in the area of via of the Tusculum.
Two firefighting units rushed to the scene, led by the Director of Firefighting Operations, who worked for several hours on the top of Tuscolo to put out the flames.
The complex operations of extinguishing the fire
In detail, the Frascati firefighters intervened (two were also at work Canadair and two helicopters) and the Civil Protection of several municipalities of the Castelli Romani. Also supporting were the Local Police of Grottaferrata and Monte Porzio, in addition to the Park Rangers.
Complicating the firefighters’ extinguishing operations and blocking the intervention of the Civil Protection, the strong vento which persisted in the area for hours, fueling the fire that in a short time incinerated several hectares of vegetation.
Around 8pm on Tuesday, after about 5 hours of incessant work, the flames still showed no signs of retreating, also threatening the Archaeological Park and surrounding the Cross located on the summit of Tuscolo.
The comment of the mayor of Monte Porzio
“I have never seen a fire like this here in Tuscolo, a real disaster” commented the mayor of Monte Porzio, Massimo Chicksarrived on site.
“A truly desolate landscape. The only consolation is to see with what determination and stubbornness the Civil Protection volunteers and the Fire Brigade are committing themselves to dealing with this truly incredible emergency” added Pulcini.
The serious fire at Tuscolo was just one of the many emergency cases to be managed by the firefighters in the Rome area and its surroundings on this day, with others fire broke out near Marino, Ciampino and Pomezia.
An area that does not seem to have a day of peace in recent weeks, due to a mix of high temperatures, poor vegetation management and malicious acts.
