Trump’s presidential nomination acceptance speech arrives in Milwaukee
Prosecutor vs. Criminal Structure Highlighted… “I Know Trump’s Type Well”
“Trump’s abortion ban will be stopped”
US Democratic leadership continues to express support for Harris
Reuters poll… Harris 44%, Trump 42%
Vice President Kamala Harris, who is expected to be the Democratic presidential nominee, chose Milwaukee, where the Republican National Convention was held, as her first campaign location and stepped up her attacks on former President Donald Trump. With the ‘Trump vs. Harris’ structure in the November presidential election becoming clear, she has highlighted former President Trump as a criminal and has taken an opposing stance on abortion rights, unions, and economic policies. With a close race expected between the two sides, with opinion polls showing Vice President Harris ahead of former President Donald Trump, it seems that there will be a fierce competition between the Democratic and Republican parties for the ticket to the White House over the next three months.

Vice President Harris said on the 23rd (local time) in Milwaukee, the largest city in Wisconsin, a battleground state, “I heard this morning that we have secured enough delegate support to secure the Democratic nomination,” and “I pledge to you that over the next few weeks, we will work to unite our party and prepare to win in November.”
He said this election was a “choice between autonomy and chaos,” and that “we believe in a future where everyone has the opportunity to get ahead, not just get by.” After contrasting former President Trump’s vision for the country with his own as “the future versus the past,” he emphasized, “We will fight for the future.”
The offensive against former President Trump, who will face off in the upcoming election in three months, continued for two consecutive days. Vice President Harris mentioned her career as a prosecutor and defined the confrontation with former President Trump as a “prosecutor vs. criminal,” raising the level of criticism. Former President Trump was previously found guilty in a New York court in late May of 34 charges related to paying hush money to silence sexual harassment allegations.
“In that role, I’ve dealt with all kinds of criminals,” Harris said. “Predators who abuse women, fraudsters who defraud consumers, charlatans who bend the rules for profit.” She added, “I know the Donald Trump type.”
He also announced policy pledges similar to those of President Joe Biden, including protecting abortion rights, protecting unions, and creating a middle-class economy.
“We will stop Trump’s extreme abortion ban,” he said, “because women have the right to decide what to do with their own bodies, and the government should not tell them what to do.” He added, “If Congress passes legislation restoring reproductive freedom (including guaranteeing abortion rights), I will sign that bill as president of the United States.”
Milwaukee, which Vice President Harris has chosen as her first campaign location, is where former President Trump’s presidential inauguration ceremony, the Republican National Convention, took place from the 15th to the 18th. With the new Democratic presidential candidate becoming certain, there is analysis that the symbolic significance of her first campaign in the place where former President Trump gave his acceptance speech is significant in emphasizing her will to confront him. It also seems to reflect the fact that she sees Wisconsin, a swing state, as a key battleground in the presidential election.
Vice President Harris has secured the support of key Democratic leaders in both the House and Senate, and is effectively only left with the official nomination as the Democratic candidate. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries held a joint press conference and announced their support for Vice President Harris as the new Democratic presidential candidate. Following former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi the day before, all senior Democratic Party members and leaders have joined the ranks of supporting Vice President Harris. Senior Democratic lawmakers and potential presidential candidates within the party have already stood by Vice President Harris. Vice President Harris has already secured the support of delegates to become the Democratic presidential candidate. According to an Associated Press survey conducted the previous day, 2,668 Democratic delegates supported Vice President Harris, far exceeding the magic number (simple majority) of 1,976 delegates needed to secure the presidential nomination.
The New York Times (NYT) evaluated that “Harris has won almost all the support of the Democratic Party as a candidate to counter Trump in November, just two days after Biden withdrew from the race and endorsed her.” Bloomberg News reported that “Democrats have been able to unite after weeks of infighting over how to respond to Biden’s disastrous debate performance,” and “now they will embark on the mission of defeating Trump, the Republican nominee.”
With the US presidential race virtually set to be between Vice President Harris and former President Trump, polling results predicting that the Democratic Party will win the election are also drawing attention. According to a survey conducted by Reuters and polling firm Ipsos on 1,018 voters on the 22nd and 23rd, Vice President Harris recorded a 44% approval rating in a hypothetical two-way matchup, leading former President Trump (42%) by 2 percentage points (margin of error ±3 percentage points). In a multi-candidate matchup including independent candidate Robert Kennedy Jr., Vice President Harris recorded a 42% approval rating, beating former President Trump (38%) by 4 percentage points.
In addition, 56% of respondents in this survey evaluated Vice President Harris as “mentally sharp and able to handle challenges.” Former President Trump received the same response from 49%. As it becomes clear that the Democratic presidential candidate will change from 81-year-old President Biden to 59-year-old Vice President Harris, this analysis means that the controversy over age may now be directed at former President Trump, who is 78.
