Computex 2024: Ryzen 8840U at work in Zotac’s handheld console

The model with a 7-inch display may hit stores sometime in the third quarter.

We saw the ZONE at Zotac’s stand, with which the company intends to enter the handheld game console market. As the company’s announcer revealed a few days before the exhibition, it is a device based on a 7-inch AMOLED panel, and the choice of SoC is interesting, since instead of the Z1 Extreme, it has a Hawk Point, to be exact, the eight-core AMD Ryzen 8840U. This is a low-power model with a cTDP range of 15-30 watts, which VideoCardz according to your information by default, the machine will be used at 15 watts, but if necessary, it can also run with a TDP of 28 watts. There is not much difference between the Z1 Extreme and the 8840U in expected performance during games (but the fact is that we get an extra NPU), so the choice may have been more about availability than the pursuit of exceptionally high frame rates.

The ZONE is quite a phenomenon live, despite only having a 7-inch display: a massive, wide and tall piece with a small support that folds out from the back. The buttons are more or less in the right place depending on hand size, and the ones labeled ABXY have been given an Xbox-like layout.

The levers and triggers work on the basis of the Hall effect, the amount of RAM is 16 GB, and the role of the back storage is played by an M.2 2280 SSD, so expansion is in principle possible if 512 GB turns out to be insufficient. The display has Full HD resolution, 800 cd/m2It offers a brightness of 120 Hz and an image refresh rate of 120 Hz, but without its dynamic variability.

In principle, we will be able to meet Zotac’s console in stores during the fall, and about its future price in some places 800 euros were written, but we suspect that there might have been some language problem in the background. There are two reasons for this; on the one hand, the person we asked said that there is no final decision about it yet, and on the other hand, this amount seems very high based on the specifications.
