“Somsak” leads civil servants of the Ministry of Public Health to take an oath and launch the NAT2 diplotype testing project in honor of His Majesty the King, indicating that it will help doctors prescribe appropriate TB medications, showing that it can help reduce deaths after still finding 80,000 patients per year, resulting in 7,800 deaths.
Mr. Somsak Thepsuthin, Minister of Public Health, presided over the oath-taking ceremony to be a good civil servant and the power of the country on the occasion of the auspicious ceremony of His Majesty the King’s 6th cycle birthday anniversary on July 28, 2024, with executives, civil servants and personnel of the Ministry of Public Health at the flagpole of the Ministry of Public Health.
Mr. Somsak led the blessing speech, saying, “May Your Majesty, the dust of your feet, protect us. I, Mr. Somsak Thepsuthin, Minister of Public Health, along with civil servants and officials of the Ministry of Public Health, are extremely delighted to have come together to show our loyalty and pledge to be good civil servants and the power of the country on the occasion of His Majesty’s birthday anniversary on July 28, 2024. We are all grateful for His Majesty’s immeasurable kindness and grace in performing various royal duties with diligence and acting as a role model for all civil servants in performing their duties for the benefit of the people and the prosperity of the country.”
“The royal advice given to civil servants on various occasions has created a sense of duty and responsibility in performing duties for the country with fairness and honesty, which all of us will take to heart and practice to achieve success in order to fulfill the royal intention of His Majesty with loyalty forever. On this most auspicious occasion, all of us would like to pray with loyalty that the power of the Triple Gem and all sacred things in the world, as well as the power of the Lord of Siam Deva, please protect and bestow victory upon His Majesty with good fortune, prosperity, happiness, royal power and great prestige, and be the inspiration and guardian of all people forever.”
Then, Mr. Somsak presided over the opening ceremony of the “NAT2 diplotype testing project using the Real-time PCR technique to support the adjustment of Isoniazid anti-tuberculosis drug levels in honor of His Majesty the King on the occasion of His Majesty the King’s 6th cycle birthday anniversary on July 28, 2024”, with Dr. Yongyos Thamvuthi, Director-General of the Department of Medical Sciences, and executives of the Department of Medical Sciences joining at the Department of Medical Sciences, Ministry of Public Health.
Mr. Somsak said that tuberculosis is still a global health problem that affects the quality of life of the population. The World Health Organization has classified Thailand as one of the 30 countries with a high tuberculosis burden. In 2023, Thailand had more than 80,000 new and relapsed tuberculosis patients and approximately 7,800 deaths. Therefore, tuberculosis treatment requires patients to receive continuous medication to prevent the spread. The side effects of anti-tuberculosis drugs cause hepatitis, which some patients have to stop taking. Therefore, the treatment is ineffective. The Ministry of Public Health has therefore introduced innovative technology for testing for tuberculosis drug subtypes in patients so that treating physicians have information to adjust medications appropriately for each patient. This will help reduce the occurrence of hepatitis from anti-tuberculosis drugs, allowing continuous medication, which is very important for achieving the goal of ending tuberculosis.
In addition, Mr. Somsak would like to thank the Department of Medical Sciences for introducing a new innovation, the Nat2 diploid type test, which will help see how each person’s Nat2 diploid type is able to break down tuberculosis drugs. Because if some people’s Nat2 diploid type works well, the tuberculosis drugs will be broken down quickly, making the treatment less effective. Or if some people’s Nat2 diploid type does not work well, the tuberculosis drugs will be left over, resulting in hepatitis. Therefore, the Nat2 diploid type test will allow doctors to prescribe more appropriate drugs. This must be done because each year, 80,000 people get tuberculosis and 7,800 people die. If we have the Nat2 diploid type test, it will help reduce deaths.
