52 percent of Czechs are interested in the Olympics, they look forward to athletics and tennis

Prague – 52 percent of the Czech population is interested in the upcoming summer Olympic Games in Paris. Men are more interested, the level of interest also increases with age and education. Of the specific events, Czechs look forward to broadcasts of athletics and tennis the most. Significantly more than other respondents from the world are interested in watching Olympic sport climbing. This follows from a survey, the results of which were provided to ČTK by the Ipsos agency.

52 percent of Czechs are interested in the sports competition under the five rings, which will start on Friday in host France. According to the survey, Asian residents are most interested in games – 86 percent of respondents in China, 77 percent in Thailand, and 75 percent in Indonesia. On the contrary, the Olympics are the least attractive for Belgians, where 38 percent of respondents are interested in them, or for Japanese and Hungarians. Even the native French look forward to the games less than the Czechs, less than half of the respondents showed interest. However, in all countries except Turkey, the level of interest in this year’s games is higher than in the last summer Olympics, which took place three years ago in Tokyo.

34 percent of Czechs surveyed are going to watch athletics, where javelin thrower Jakub Vadlejch is one of the favorites for a medal. Tennis, in which fresh Wimbledon champions Kateřina Siniaková and Barbora Krejčíková will defend the Olympic gold in women’s doubles, is expected by 29 percent of Czechs. They are also attracted to Olympic gymnastics, football, water sports and cycling. 13 percent of Czechs are interested in sport climbing, where Adam Ondra will fight for precious metals – three percent of respondents worldwide showed interest in this discipline.

Czech men are more interested in football than the Olympic disciplines. Women, on the other hand, plan to watch gymnastics and water sports more often, where water slalom skier Jiří Prskavec and speed canoeist Martin Fuksa are expected to attack for medals. At the global level, the most anticipated sporting event is also football, which interests 28 percent of respondents, followed by athletics with 26 percent and gymnastics with 20 percent.

Ipsos also asked about this year’s sports collection of the Czech team. The outfit, which also includes an entry-level outfit by designer Jan Černý with a distinctive mottled coat, was noted by 71 percent of respondents. More than half of them – specifically 59 percent – do not like it. The age group from 18 to 26 expressed support for the collection.

Seven out of ten Czechs interviewed agreed that the Olympics motivates young people to play active sports. However, only 34 percent of Czechs agreed that the games also motivate them personally to be active in sports.

The survey among Czech respondents was conducted by Ipsos this month via the Populace.cz online panel, 1,019 people aged 18 to 65 took part in it. The global research was carried out in May and June in another 33 countries, a total of 24,531 respondents answered the questions.
