Cheaper Teslas Coming, But Not the $25,000 Model 2

We have known for some time now that Elon Musk has shifted its focus to artificial intelligence and autonomous driving, giving priority to the Robotaxi project and postponing production of a new model that was due to come out of the factory in Mexico.

The car everyone calls Model 2even if the name has never been made official, it should have had a $25,000 price targetfinally bringing to market a more accessible model, but with all the Tesla technologies.

During the second quarter investor call, the company announced an important piece of news, namely be working on cheaper modelsand that these are closer than you might think. However, this is not the new smallest car, but rather Models based on Model 3 and Model Ydata now for early 2025.

This is what we read in the letter to investors: “Plans for new vehicles, including more affordable models, remain on track for production to begin in the first half of 2025. These vehicles will utilize aspects of the next-generation platform, as well as aspects of our current platforms, and may be produced on the same production lines as our current vehicle lineup.“.

So models that will have a mix between the current and future platforms (highly modular), and that will bring the price down. From these few lines it is not clear whether these will be new “setups”, therefore maintaining an identical appearance to the current models, or if they will be more differentiated models. The price however should not drop so much as to reach the 25,000 dollars of the compact model.
