At 8 o’clock on Wednesday evening, the 2024 university admission point limits were made public, around 121,000 applicants were able to find out whether they had been admitted to a higher education institution.
Like last year, Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) had the highest number of applicants this year, with 17,080 students choosing ELTE in first place. The second most popular was the University of Debrecen with 9,950 first-time applicants, and the third was the University of Szeged, where 8,395 applied first.
In the general admission procedure, a total of 120,990 valid applications were submitted for higher education courses starting in September – about 5,500 fewer than a year earlier.
Among the most popular courses at ELTE, the state-subsidized places required 476 points for law major, 453 points for psychology, 415 points for communication and media studies, 365 points for program design IT major (55 points less than last year), and 363 points for special education to reach the maximum of 500. -from. At the University of Debrecen, 431 points were required for places with state scholarships in law, 443 points for psychology, and 393 points for general medicine, which is 21 points less than a year earlier. At the University of Szeged, 412 points were required for the general medical course (428 points last year), 446 points for the psychology course, and 438 points for the law course. In other words, the point limits for several popular majors at the leading universities have decreased compared to a year ago.
However, the summation of the points achieved by the applicants did not go smoothly, after the rules for calculating points changed from this year. The universities themselves can determine whether they require minimum points, advanced graduation, what is recognized as the fifth graduation subject, which subjects are taken into account for secondary school results, and what other results are given institutional points. The calculation of points can be different for each university and for each major, which led to the fact that applicants could receive several different scores, and even these changed from one day to the next. In addition, it happened that the system performing the calculations did not calculate with the correct data either.
According to the Education Office, applications were processed until the day of the announcement of the score limits, until then the scores of the applicants could not be considered final. They also drew attention to the fact that if there were still unprocessed documents or some data was not received in time, this could cause a change in the scores. They promised that everyone would have an accurate and verified score until the point limits were announced.
