Ambassador to Japan Yoon Duk-min paid a courtesy call on Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on the 25th.
According to Yonhap News, the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that Ambassador to Japan Yoon Duk-min visited Prime Minister Kishida on that day to pay his farewell remarks.
It is known to be relatively rare for the Japanese prime minister to meet with individual country ambassadors. Ambassador Yoon, who served as the head of the National Diplomatic Academy, took office in July 2022 and is expected to leave office soon.
Prime Minister Kishida told Ambassador Yoon that he paid tribute to the great role Japan played in the development of Japan-Korea relations during his term. He went on to say that Japan-Korea relations have been developing vigorously, with active exchanges and cooperation in various fields from politics and security to economy and culture, and asked for continued interest in Japan-Korea relations even after his term ends.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi, the Japanese government spokesperson, said at a press conference that afternoon, “I understand that Ambassador Yoon’s visit to Prime Minister Kishida was coordinated to coincide with his retirement,” and “The (Japanese) government recognizes that Ambassador Yoon played a major role in the development of Japan-South Korea relations during his term.”
