The Sea-Watch 5 rescued 156 people aboard two overcrowded boats in the Mediterranean. “Several of them were intoxicated by engine fumes,” the NGO wrote.
The Sea-Watch 5, the new ship of the NGO that carries out rescue operations in the Mediterranean, rescued 156 people who were on board two overcrowded boats: on one there were 31 people e on the other 125.
“Both had people below deck, where engine fumes and lack of oxygen pose a serious danger,” the NGO itself wrote on X. “Several of them were intoxicated and are now receiving oxygen.”
This morning, at 10:30, the rescue ship had reached the area north of Libya after two days of complicated navigation. The story was told, through stories, on the Sea Watch Instagram profile, by Enrico Baraldiof the Kepler452 theatre company, which together with the actor Nicholas Borghesi, He boarded two days ago along with the rest of the rescue team.

“Sea Watch 5 finally arrived in the central Mediterranean area north of Libya last night. After two days of sailing in terrible weather, with very high waves. We didn’t expect there to be any departures, but this morning we received a report of a boat in distress,” the actor said. “The report came from Seabird, the Sea Watch plane, and we are heading right now to the area where the presence of this case of a boat in distress was reported to us.”
Shortly after, the video of the first rescue follows. “The rescue operation of a vessel with 31 people on board has just ended. At this moment our collaborator has climbed up to mark the vessel with a spray can”, he continued, showing behind him the small dilapidated vessel with one of the crew members on board. “Thirty-one people left this morning at 4:00 from the coast of Libya As soon as the window of good weather opened after two days of waves. The people are already on board the Sea Watch 5, they have been embarked and we will reach them shortly”, he added.
A third and final clip shows the moments after the second rescue, that of the ship on which they were more than one hundred migrants. “We just completed a second rescue of the day. This time an even bigger boat. I make these videos once the people have already been boarded and are no longer on board but are already on our Sea Watch 5,” the boy said. “We are checking that there is nothing left on the boat and then it will be marked with a spray can. It was a longer operation than the previous one: about 150 people. About ten children, I don’t have the exact numbers yet,” he added.
