The British media company BBC announced that it plans to lay off 500 workers by the end of March 2026 as part of a major economic transformation plan.
On the occasion of the publication of its annual report, the BBC indicated that its workforce had fallen by almost 2,000 jobs, or ten per cent, in the last five years.
“By the end of March 2026, we expect a reduction of around 500 jobs,” the BBC said in a statement.
In addition to the annual savings plan of 594 million euros that was announced two years ago, the BBC is implementing an additional plan to reduce spending to 237 million euros, which it announced last March.
Britain’s key media institution is under fire from the Conservatives, who lost power to Labor in the July 4 general election.
It is faced with the outflow of young audiences from traditional media in favor of social platforms and networks, as well as with the increasing questioning of financing methods.
In March, its director-general Tim Davey said the BBC was examining different options for reforming the license fee, its main source of funding, after 2028, when the current charter expires.
