The sharpshooter thought he was being watched. This is what drones usually do, they circle around you, record a video and then send it to OnlyFans. Or something like that.
Jokes aside. Merchants have had to overcome a long list of technological, regulatory and commercial challenges to offer drone delivery. But they had no idea that the drones would be the target of furious fire. In the latest episode of the US satire, the Lake County Sheriff said last week that 72-year-old Dennis Winn admitted to shooting a Walmart drone with a 9mm pistol as it flew near his home in Florida.
According to an arrest affidavit, Winn told officers he had previous experience with drones flying over his home and believed he was being followed. So he went inside, got his gun from the safe, went outside and fired one shot at the drone, which was about 22 meters in the air. And he hit. But he had no idea that the drones were around as a promotional event to attract more businesses that could use drone delivery. And so he earned charges of shooting at an “aircraft”, causing damage in excess of $1,000, and waving a queer flag in a public square.
When the drone returned to its pilots, they found a nice hole in it and $2,500 worth of damage to the loading system. When Winn was confronted by the sheriffs about all of this, he replied that he might have to get a really good lawyer. Probably yes.
