Dave Matthews: “Netanyahu’s visit to the US is a disgusting show of support for someone who doesn’t deserve it”

Dave Matthews, frontman of the Dave Matthews Band, was interviewed during the demonstration against the visit of Benjamin Netanyahu, Prime Minister of Israel, to the United States.

Outside the Capitol in Washington, where Netanyahu was welcomed by the United States government, Dave Matthews, who performed with his band in Portugal in May, told Al Jazeera: “I think it’s horrible that at a time when the whole world is watching what this man is doing in Gaza, and also in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, we welcome him into the supposed holy house of our government.”

Referring to the “ongoing struggle” of the Palestinian people, Dave Matthews says that these people “want nothing more than dignity and the ability to live independent lives, dreaming of a better future. This man (Benjamin Netanyahu) is the pinnacle of obstruction to that freedom. For us to have him visit our country is an obscenity. And a disgusting show of support for someone who does not deserve our support.”

“I am ashamed that my taxes are used to finance the brutalization of an entire people. And I am ashamed that our government welcomes (the Prime Minister of Israel) here,” adds the musician born in Johannesburg, South Africa, 57 years ago.
