The Hungarian men’s water polo team started the World Cup qualifiers in Bucharest with a 12-11 victory over Spain. Our best was Krisztián Manhercz, who scored six goals.

World Cup, Qualifying, Group A, Round 1:
Hungary-Spain 12-11 (4-3, 2-2, 4-1, 2-5)
the scorers of the Hungarian team: Manhercz 6, Vigvári 3, Burián 2, Nagy Á.

This time, Dániel Szakonyi and Zsombor Vismeg were left out of the 16-member Hungarian squad in the battle for the 2022 and 2023 world champions.

This was the first match of the national team in which the players could get acquainted with the new rules: the most important of these was that the playing field became five meters shorter, and five seconds each were taken from the attacking time and the man advantage.

The Spaniards took the lead in Monday’s match, but the Hungarians scored four goals in a row and kept their lead until the break. In the third quarter, the national team led by Vigvári Vendel built up a four-goal lead, one of which was kept until the final whistle thanks to the strong play of team captain Krisztián Manhercz.

We spoke with the new team captain here:

The Hungarians will meet the French on Tuesday at 14:00, the first place in the three-team group goes directly to the quarter-finals. The first six from the tournament advance to the eight-team super final in April, in which the German and Dutch national teams from Division B have already secured their places.
