The Aptera “solar” car is almost ready for production

Californian company Aptera Motors has unveiled the final “production-ready” version of its solar-powered electric vehicle. The car, called the Aptera, was on display at this year’s Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas.

According to the company, the Aptera is now in the “final development phase” where the three-wheeler’s “production design, production components and key performance such as range, solar charging capability and efficiency” are being tested.

As for the range, in 2019 it was announced that it will be up to 1,610 kilometers on a single charge, as well as up to 65 kilometers of daily driving using solar energy. However, now Aptera claims a range of 644 kilometers on a single charge, as well as the already mentioned 65 kilometers on “solar energy”.

The company says the Aptera can be charged via a fast charger in less than an hour to offer a range of 644 kilometers. How far the 1,610 kilometer range goal is remains to be seen.

The car has integrated 700W solar cells, a lightweight composite body, three electric motors located in the wheels, all-wheel drive and two seats. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in about four seconds and reaches a maximum speed of 163 km/h.

Speaking about the production-ready design, Aptera points out that they are working with the company Pininfarina, which is among the best in its business. Air resistance is 0.13.

The company already has 50,000 orders for Aptera, the total value of which is $1.7 billion. According to that calculation, one car costs $34,000 on average.

Those who live in sunny California will probably rarely need to charge their batteries, as free solar energy will do the job.
