BMW Panoramic iDrive sistem

BMW has promoted the next-generation Panoramic iDrive interface that will be present in all its future models.

The bold new system, revealed at the CES show in Las Vegas, will first be used in the production version of the Neue Klasse X electric SUV (arriving later this year), and will then be adopted on both electric and SUS models.

The Panoramic iDrive interior concept consists of several separate elements, the most impressive of which is the screen that is projected over the black strip that runs across the width of the windshield. It includes key driving information – such as speed – in front of the driver. Then there’s the centrally-positioned touch screen, which faces significantly towards the driver, with BMW’s new operating system X software.

For right-hand drive models, BMW will offer a touchscreen that tilts in the opposite direction, according to Autocar.

It can receive over-the-air software updates and is fully developed as a touch and voice control system. It is also designed to be more intuitive. For example, the sat nav map is now the default background. It features no physical controls, with BMW reasoning that these limited its ability to offer more complex and varied options.

The system works in conjunction with a new steering wheel that features a series of physical buttons that offer haptic feedback.

There’s also an optional 3D head-up display (HUD) that projects information into the driver’s line of sight above the Panoramic Vision bar.

Because the various elements are developed together, BMW claims they are fully integrated. So, for example, the HUD will show directions while the panoramic screen provides additional road information.

BMW says the system was developed based on anonymized real-world usage data collected from its existing fleet of more than 22 million vehicles and then refined in laboratory tests.
