At CES 2025, BMW presented the new generation of its car infotainment system. Panoramic iDrive is the new step in digitizing the interiors of the German manufacturer’s cars.
BMW presented the next generation of the infotainment system at CES in Las Vegas. Called iDrive Panoramic, it will use a single central screen and a huge head-up display that spans the entire width of the windshield, with all new BMWs to follow.
The manufacturer focuses on four elements for the tenth generation of the iDrive operating system. The new iDrive X is based on four key elements, the first of which is BMW Panoramic Vision.
In other words, this is a huge head-up display, which spans the entire width of the windshield and which provides all the necessary information, but also to the occupants. The most important ones are projected directly into the driver’s line of sight on the left side of the BMW Panoramic Vision (on left-hand drive cars), above the steering wheel. The driver can customize the content in the center and right areas of the BMW Panoramic Vision via the central display. The integration of BMW Panoramic Vision creates a 3D effect for the driver and passengers. This is complemented by the BMW 3D Head-Up Display, which projects navigation and driver highlights.
The new iDrive generation completely abandons physical buttons
We turn our attention to the dashboard, which now only includes a single, centrally mounted screen. It uses matrix backlight display technology. The interface running on it looks familiar, being quite similar to what we currently see on BMW models. However, there is an updated menu, which now features QuickSelect. Certain widgets can also be sent to Panoramic Vision with a simple tap.
Finally, BMW introduces a new steering wheel, which is equipped with touch controls. The new multifunction steering wheel uses BMW’s shy-tech technology, whereby relevant buttons are illuminated to highlight available functions.
The steering wheel serves as the primary physical control, and its buttons provide active haptic feedback. The buttons are raised, which makes them extremely easy to locate and means the driver can press them without having to take their eyes off the road.
The entire experience is completed by a virtual assistant that integrates Large Language Models and that can respond to the commands of any of the car’s occupants.
