On January 8, 2025, the Bihor Public Health Directorate (DSP) confirmed the first case of illness with the human metapneumovirus (HMPV) in Bihor county. It is about a 67-year-old woman from Oradea, who did not travel on business in the country, which led DSP Bihor to initiate an epidemiological investigation to identify the source of the illness.
The woman started showing respiratory symptoms on the second day of Christmas, and the PCR tests performed at the Bihor County Emergency Clinical Hospital confirmed HMPV infection. She was hospitalized on January 4, in the Pneumology ward, due to respiratory failure. Although suffering from several medical conditions, the patient’s condition is considered good and she is receiving oxygen treatment.
“The patient has comorbidities in the antecedents, the disease started on December 26, 2024 with respiratory symptoms, she was tested by PCR at the Bihor County Emergency Clinical Hospital and the test result was received today. The attitude to be followed is similar to the cases of COVID-19”, declared for Bihon.ro Dorel Șîrț, spokesperson of DSP Bihor.
Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a virus that can cause respiratory infections, but there is no vaccine available to prevent this condition. The virus is also spreading in China, which may increase global concerns about its spread.
DSP Bihor is continuing investigations to better understand how this virus got into the community, given that the woman had no recent contacts in the country’s business.
